South Texas Health System McAllen Proudly Welcomes Purav Modi as the Facility’s New Chief Operating Officer

From environmental services/housekeeping and engineering to the pharmacy and rehabilitation departments, it takes a village to provide quality, compassionate care in the hospital setting, especially at South Texas Health System’s flagship facility, STHS McAllen.
The Chief Operating Officer serves as the key executive responsible for managing daily operations and implementing strategic initiatives across the 441-bed facility, which is home to a Level 1 Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
To help lead the facility’s 1,000-plus employees, STHS McAllen recently named Purav Modi, MHA, as its new chief operating officer (COO).
Collaborating directly with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Emma Montes-Ewing, Modi will help ensure efficient delivery of patient care while maintaining operational excellence and financial sustainability at STHS McAllen.

It’s a high-profile role Modi looks forward to tackling.
“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to serve as the chief operating officer at STHS McAllen and I look forward helping ensure that we continue to provide the highest quality of comprehensive care to patients in our community,” says Modi.
No stranger to STHS, Modi previously served as an associate administrator at STHS Heart, where he spearheaded the growth of key programs and service lines.
He officially took on the role of COO at STHS McAllen on Monday, April 21, bringing with him a proven record in hospital operations and a strong focus on patient-centered care.
“Our community is receiving some of the most advanced care available in the country without having to leave the Rio Grande Valley,” says Modi. “And I’m excited to help facilitate a high level of care through the 1,000-plus staff members that help us provide quality, compassionate care on a daily basis.”
A Houston native, Modi earned his bachelor’s degree in medical ethics from Baylor University, as well as a master’s degree in health administration from The George Washington University.
Engaged in several professional organizations, including the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), Modi has received numerous accolades for his achievements, including the President’s Gold Scholarship while enrolled at Baylor and the Eric Sellers Scholarship Award in 2019 for crafting the winning essay on the importance of implementing lifelong learning in a young leader’s career.
Modi has focused on fostering a culture of excellence throughout his career while prioritizing the importance of teamwork.
“My leadership philosophy has always been relationship-focused,” says Modi, who has no problem throwing on scrubs and interacting with staff and patients. “Managing and making decisions behind a desk in a suit is not me. Our staff, patients and community deserve executives who are visible, open-minded and willing to innovate to provide the best care possible for the people of the Rio Grande Valley. I’m eager to usher in my style of leadership as chief executive officer at STHS McAllen.”
In his new role, Modi will be involved in strategic planning, business development and project management with a focus on service line growth, improved patient outcomes and enhanced patient satisfaction.
“A positive patient experience drives all that we do at STHS, and through Purav’s leadership, we’ll continue advancing our mission of providing high-quality comprehensive care to the communities we serve,” says Montes-Ewing. “We look forward to Purav’s future within the facility and how, in this role, he’ll not only serve the future of our facility and staff, but the patients and families that depend on us to meet their healthcare needs.”
