The Department of Orthopedic Surgery offers surgical and non-surgical treatment of orthopedic problems. Our staff includes orthopedics specialists in the following areas:

Total Knee and Hip Joint Replacement Center

Patients who come to the Total Knee and Hip Joint Replacement Center at South Texas Health System McAllen are surrounded by an atmosphere of caring, comfort and complete understanding. The center provides comprehensive preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation services for patients undergoing total hip replacement and total knee replacement. The center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of orthopedics rehabilitation specialists, including physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, case managers and orthopedic technicians. Working together, these skilled orthopedics professionals provide a full complement of patient services that include:

  • Preoperative education 
  • Advance planning for hospital stay and post-hospital care
  • Onsite rehabilitation
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy — Instructions on bathing, dressing, home safety, utilizing assistive devices

Total hip and knee replacement surgeries generally take from two to three hours and involve affixing an artificial joint made of metal and plastic to the bone. After surgery, patients stay in the center, where recovery and rehabilitation begins.



Hand, Shoulder and Elbow Surgery

The Orthopedics Department offers expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic problems of the hand, shoulder, and upper extremity, including:

  • Work-related and other traumatic injuries
  • Arthritis (rheumatoid and degenerative)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Congenital hand injuries and deformities
  • Upper extremity pain problems
  • Reconstruction following trauma
  • Rotator cuff disorder
  • Arthritis (replacement surgery)
  • Fractures, dislocations, instability
  • Tendon problems

Foot and Ankle Surgery

Our foot and ankle medical staff offer expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of problems of the foot and ankle, with emphasis on adult reconstruction and revision surgery, traumatic and post-traumatic problems, congenital, and developmental disease and deformities, including:

  • Forefoot abnormalities, deformities, or painful conditions
  • Midfoot and hindfoot deformities (congenital, developmental or arthritic)
  • Tendon and ligament problems (traumatic or degenerative)
  • Diabetic foot evaluation and care (bracing, fusion, amputation)
  • Ankle fractures, arthritis, instability, deformities
  • Treatment of non-united fractures (Ilizarov technique, grafts, internal fixation, electrical stimulation)
  • Reconstruction of traumatic, developmental or congenital deformities

Traumatic Orthopedic Injuries

Our trauma service offers expertise in management of patients who have sustained orthopedic trauma and post-traumatic complications. Special emphasis is placed on the team approach and surgical management of complex orthopedic trauma as well as post traumatic reconstruction, including:

  • Complex open and closed fractures and dislocations
  • Blunt and penetrating bone, joint, muscle, and tendon injuries
  • Nonunions, malunions, and infections

Sports Medicine

The Sports Medicine Program provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of conditions and injuries related to sports. These include overuse injuries, such as stress fractures, tendinitis and bursitis and traumatic injuries to tendons and ligaments in all joints (knee, shoulder, foot, and ankle). Surgical services include:

  • Arthroscopic surgical procedures of all joints
  • Reconstructive surgery (ACL)
  • Meniscal repair
  • Meniscal and cartilage transplants
