What to Expect When Arriving for Care

Sudden illness or injury can occur without warning, and while no one typically plans a trip to the ER, everyone should know what to expect after they arrive.

Comprehensive Emergency Care

The emergency department (ED) is open 24/7 for patients who need immediate emergency surgery, including trauma, orthopedic or neurological procedures. The department cares for more than 30,000 patients each year — both adults and children — including those who have serious injuries.

Doctors, nurses, therapists and technicians work as a team in the ED to provide effective and efficient care for every patient, from those with minor ailments to those with more serious injuries and illnesses. The hospital maintains agreements with a variety of specialists who are available for consultation and follow-up care depending upon our patients' health needs.

STHS McAllen is proud to provide emergency care to area veterans. STHS McAllen also coordinates with South Texas Behavioral Health Center to provide emergency care to patients of the Center.

STHS McAllen provides advanced emergency care, including:

  • Management of trauma conditions, falls, motor vehicle accidents, fractures, sprains
  • Early intervention for strokes
  • Treating lacerations, crush injuries, abrasions
  • Orthopedic services for feet, ankles, hands, shoulders, elbows, knees and hips
  • Neurosurgery for injuries to the brain, spine and neck
  • Treatment for common infections: pneumonia, kidney infections, skin infections
  • Treatment of problems associated with diabetes, obstructive lung disease, heart disease
  • Chronic medical problems

Air Ambulance and Helipad

STHS McAllen is equipped with a helicopter landing pad, or helipad, for air support. Helipads allow air ambulances and MedEvacs to transfer patients to trauma units and receive patients from remote areas that do not have local hospitals.

Air ambulances are useful when a patient needs to be relocated to a different hospital in a short amount of time, rather than driving the patient via a traditional ambulance.

Injury Prevention

Falls are the leading cause of injury in older Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
