Each year, nearly 90,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, per the CDC, a chronic brain disorder that causes movement problems, mental health issues and other health concerns. Many people find that support groups help them cope with the day-to-day realities of having the condition.
So, to help Rio Grande Valley residents living with Parkinson’s, the South Texas Health System® McAllen Outpatient Rehabilitation Center has launched its own support group.
This program provides a space for individuals with Parkinson’s to:
- Socialize with others
- Learn about various topics to promote healthy living
- Engage in exercises that will enable increased participation in daily activities
The program’s goal is to allow individuals with PD to feel empowered by gaining knowledge on how to manage their day-to-day symptoms and to help internally motivate individuals to stay active and rise above their diagnosis.
