Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite

STHS McAllen is part of a growing number of Texas businesses by being a designated Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite. As a mother-friendly employer, STHS McAllen proactively supports employees who choose to breastfeed their infants by providing time, space, and other assistance to help them maintain breastfeeding after returning to work. Employers who provide Mother-Friendly Worksites benefit from increased employee retention, lower absenteeism, higher morale, greater productivity, reduced healthcare costs and improved short- and long-term health of the breastfeeding mother and her child.

The Texas Mother-Friendly Program, administered by the Texas Department of State Health Services, recognizes employers with written policies reflecting their support for their breastfeeding employees. Such policies provide work schedule flexibility to allow milk expression breaks; offer a private space other than a bathroom, where the employee can pump or breastfeed; and ensure easy access to a clean water source and hygienic milk storage arrangements.

Texas Ten Step

STHS McAllen is a designated Texas Ten Step facility, meaning that we encourage breastfeeding for new moms, as the long-term health benefits of breastfeeding for both babies and mothers are numerous. According to Texas Ten Step, breastfeeding is linked to decreased sickness and mortality for babies, as well as decreased risk for maternal illness. Being a Texas Ten Step also means our staff and physicians emphasize safety and effectiveness in The Maternity Center.
