Physical Therapy
Outpatient physical therapy can help patients minimize pain through exercises that are designed to restore strength, improve balance and increase endurance. By addressing specific conditions related to diseases or the effects of total joint replacements, physical therapy activities will focus on restoring mobility and independence. Patients will also learn how to properly use mobility devices such as walkers, canes, braces and artificial limbs.
The physical therapists on staff are skilled in treating a variety of musculoskeletal, orthopedic and neurological injuries or disorders including:
- Low back and neck pain, sciatica
- Arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis
- Degenerative disc disease
- Pain and inflammation, muscle spasms
- Stroke, Parkinson's disease, muscular dystrophy
- Muscle weakness, difficulty walking

Treatment will include a wide range of exercises and techniques to help patients regain strength and control. Some common services include manual therapy, gait training, balance training, sports injury rehabilitation, spine rehabilitation and core stabilization. The staff will create an individualized plan based on the needs and goals of the patient.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists use therapeutic approaches to restore and enhance each patient's living skills. Patients are trained to resume their daily routines, including toileting, grooming, bathing, dressing, cooking and working. Our outpatient occupational therapy services include an individualized evaluation with the patient, family and occupational therapist to determine goals, customized intervention to improve the patient's ability to perform daily activities and reach goals, and an outcomes evaluation to ensure that goals are being met or to make changes to the intervention plan.

Speech Therapy
Speech-language pathologists at STHS McAllen evaluate and provide outpatient speech therapy for adults with communication disorders, including speech, language, swallowing, cognitive communication, social communication, pragmatics, auditory processing, fluency (stuttering) and voice disorders. Speech-language pathologists also provide training for using alternative/augmentative communication (AAC) devices and provide home exercise programs to increase functional outcomes of therapy.
